    Choosing Headlights/Taillights

While really paying attention to my headlight bucket the other day, I found that the PO replaced the cap that holds the light into the lamp with a piece of wire. It works fine and I'm not super worried but I'd like to try and make things right. I am already going to a salvage yard up in Denver this weekend to look for a new taillight and am now figuring I'll look for a replacement lamp as well.

Although I found the 1980-1982 1000GL, 1100GL, 650GL, 550T, 750L, and 850GL all shared the same lights, is there anything I should consider before changing the bucket out? Does it really matter if I find something from say a later model than what is listed in the fiche?

I think all the L and T buckets are the same.

If you really want to improve your lighting, though, get a 7" bucket and a set of mounting ears, then drop in a Bosch, Hella or Candlepower light.

    The difference is quite amazing.

If I look for the 7" bucket, is there a specific bike I should look for at the salvage yard or will I have to buy new? Is there anything special about the mounting ears and my forks that I need to consider

        Um

Are you headed to Steele? What part are you needing exactly? I have a 79 GS750L in Denver that I am taking the majority of the headlight assembly off of.

I went to Steele's last weekend and can't afford to do much else for a bit. But from what I understand and found out Saturday, I won't want an L headlight as it's the same size I have now.

          Thanks anyway.

I might have an L headlight bucket. 650 or 550, not sure.

              The L's had 6.5" and 6" headlights.
Allm of the other models had the 7" ones but the 1100E's and 1150's as far as I know.
If you need a 7" light , bucket and ears, I have some.

Z1 enterprises sell a 7" for $40 for the Kawi. I had one on my skunk for a while. Decent unit.

Had to buy the actual light assembly elsewhere but was only $20 incl bulb from memory.

                  Thanks Dan and Dan.

Tom, I'm wanting to get a larger light than what I already have (the 6 1/2") on the bike.

This is something I want to do but am in no hurry right now. I'll look again later as I have the money.
