    seat compatibility

    Hey everybody,

I'm a proud new owner of a '79 GS 850. She had been sitting awhile when I bought her, and had at one point been laid down. A new set of intake boots, a battery charge, a cleaning of the carbs, change of oil, and a little TLC got her up and running seemingly strong for now. Unfortunately she is very ugly. The person who dropped her didn't know what he was doing and there is a terrible attempt at fixing the tank and the worse paint job I have ever seen. Since I wouldn't mind a smaller tank anyway and she needs to be painted, I was thinking of taking a tank off another bike. Does any one know of any tanks that I can just throw on gs850 with out any modifications to the frame? I have googled it a bunch with no success and for some reason the search function on this site gives me an error if I put more than two short words in it. I was thinking a gs750 tank would be cool,(seems like there are a lot more out there) but seeing that the 850's tank holds a gallon more, I don't know if it's long enough. any help is greatly appreciated.

When searching try using the Advanced Search feature, then toggle titles only. This helps fine tune the search.

As for your situation, there are no other tanks that are a direct bolt on.

That sucks. Will L series tanks fit? There seems to be more of those around as well.

Also, does anyone know how to edit the title of a thread? I would like to change seat to tank.

L tanks have different mounting points. Also, as far as your seat interchange, 79-81 850 or 80-81 1000G are your bolt on options.

And I don't think you can change a title once it's been submitted.

By the way why would you want a smaller tank? The range on a well tuned 850 is around 200 glorious miles depending on how hard you flog it....

If you happen to be one of the few that takes the time to PREVIEW your thread before posting it, that action locks in the title, too.

Apparently, the only way to edit the title is to delete the thread and start over.

Works great, if you catch it right after you post it and nobody has responded to it yet.

Perhaps for appearance? I think that is the discussion category, isn't it?
