1" vs 7/8" diameter handle bar

Hi I have a 77 GS750 and I'm looking to buy some new mirrors. I searched the forums to find the diameter of our handle bars, and it appears that 7/8th is standard. (?)

I measured mine and they appear to be 1"...is it possible that the previous owner put a larger diameter bar on the bike? Can you even do that?

    Thanks

    ~Kevin

Unlikely 1". The handlebar clamps on the triple clamp would have to be bored oversize, if that's even possible.

    To measure is to know.

Anyone with a drill press could do it.

Stock hand controls, brake master, clutch lever, ect, won't fit with 1" handlebars either.

Anyone with a screwdriver and a 10mm wrench can do that.

Might check the measurement again. 7/8" is standard and nearly universal on most Japanese bikes short of the cruisers. I've also seen bars that are 7/8" where they mount and then expand to 1". Again though, the bar controls wouldn't fit correctly.

It is hard to measure round objects with a tape measure. An easy way to be sure, is to use a crescent wrench to grip the bars, and then measure the opening of the crescent wrench.

Or spend the cash on a $6 set of calipers... You'll use them more than once... believe me.

They're probably 7/8ths... do you have a picture? If they were an inch, you couldn't run the stock throttle tube... So if the tube is stock... your bars are stock.

My brother has 1" bars on his Suzuki Intruder... they look similar... and you can get VERY thick hand-grips to fit 7/8ths bars, which throws you off even further.

Take one of the bar clamps off and measure from flat-to-flat over the "U" this is a pretty accurate way to tell... if it's 3/4ths to 13/16ths... it's for a 7/8ths bar.

if you have a metal ruler, or any quality ruler for that matter, you'll see that the diameter is right on 7/8".. just look straight down at the bar. I just replaced my stock bars on my '82 GS850 with Norman Hyde M's, fitted them with bar end mirrors.. work awesome, no vibration perfect clarity.

I think only HD uses 1" bars. Pretty much everyone else uses 7/8th".

Depends on the bike... cruisers tend to be an inch... sport and standard 7/8ths.
