whynot just change the bulbs over to led ones, and leave the assembly?

Have you checked with a local OTR truck dealer? (Kenworth, International, Peterbilt, etc.)
Signal Stat, Truck Lite and several other companies make just what you are looking for.

My brother cut out his trunk and installed an oval led truck light. The ones that go in a rubber gromet. They are very bright.
