making my own handle bars and cutting my exhaust
I have 2 questions. i have a 1981 gs450l that i am in the slow process of cleaning up and modifying. we has some bad hail the other day that damaged my tank and front fender and seat. On to my 2 questions. I am looking at making my on handle bars and modifying my pipes. I was wondering if i just used some 7/8" diameter chromoly tubing would that be sufficient?I just want a straight set of bar's with 0" up and 0" back. As far as the pipes i was wondering if anyone as ever just cut the mufflers off and ran 2 straight pipes that end at the foot pegs. My mufflers looked decent until the hail dents. How would a 450 sound without mufflers? any info is appreciated.Tags: None

The pipe bars should work, although you can buy some Bikemaster Drag bars for less than $20 so not sure it's worth it...http://www.bikebandit.com/bikemaster...FQ5rhwod_l5xWg
Bikes without mufflers are for selfish jerks that don't care about other people. Don't do it.Ed

Other than being dented a bit your mufflers should function well enough to not need cutting off. I agree with Nessism, open pipes are annoying to everyone, yourself included, as you will need to rejet the carbs to suit the open pipes.

what about cutting the mufflers off and using emgo 12" shorty mufflers? i dont look like the look of the stock pipes, but i don't want to be that guy the neighbors hate. i have plans to modify the seat and fenders. as far as the handlebars i think i like the straight bar look with 0 up and 0 back. just cut a piece of tubing at about 26" to 28". the diameter of my bars should be 7/8" if i remember correctly, right?Last edited by Guest; 06-11-2012, 11:54 PM.

i will have to swing by the harley dealer. what about my idea on the handle bars? will 7/8" diameter 4130 chromoly tubing work for a set of straight handlebars?

Yes, but, if you don't already hace the tubing, buying a set of striaght drag bars might be cheaper. Reread the reply right below your OP.

Also eBay has a crap load of HD slip-ons that can be had very cheap.
Check there and the HD dealer and compare price + shipping to what the dealer has.

You took that kid off a Harley?!?
Then you put him on an L model?
That's like 17 different felonies in most states.
