Rattle-can Gas tank
I'm working on a 81 suzuki gs 550l, the tank is my next task to take care of; I was wondering if anyone had any tips for rattle-can paint jobs on my tank?Tags: None

If you rattle can a gas tank, it better be with a clear coat than can stand up to solvents.Last edited by gsgeezer; 12-18-2012, 08:06 PM.

I can attest to the Spraymax 2k. Did I rattlecan jobber on my old bike with thethe Spraymax as2k the clearcoattime and came out beautifully.
Three key words for you: preparation, preparation, preparation. Make sure everything is smoothe and even. Really take the time and prep the tank right. Don't expect the paint to cover any defects. When it is ready to be shot, it should look just like as if it is the finished product, just not the final color.

I'll agree with the really good clearcoat as I let brake fluid spill on mine and it just destroyed my paint job.

I will vouch for the spraymax 2k clear coat. Holds up to gas with no problem . I also used the duplicolor color match in a rattle can, found in most auto stores. There is a ton of colors to choose from.

Best recommendation for a rattle can paint job i can give is use very light coats of paint, rub down with very fine wet and dry paper after each coat and use lots of water with a detergent in it. Then a good clearcoat, not sure about over your side of the pond but we struggle to get 2 pak in cans here so i used a 1 pac laquer. heres the results ..........

I am no metal worker/painter. So, I took my GK tank & side covers to a bike painter. He got rid of the ding & dents & cracks. Then, did his deep, deep brown paintwork. Looks great. It should for $650! I only paid $800 for the bike originally, but did not want to be looking at my mediocre paint & metal work all the time. Oh well.
Just wanted to let everyone know the value of their patient efforts.
