Okay been trying the brake fluid trick to strip the paint off my ABS fender. Laid a fluid soaked towel on it for the last two days and nothing. Today I roughed up the surface with some 300 sand paper. Maybe I needed to break up the clear coat. See what happens tomorrow.

Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong. -
Clear will inhibit it for sure..get thru it and the brake fluid might have a better chance of getting it loose. If not google plastic safe paint remover. Its out there and readily available.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I tried the brake fluid trick on some side covers before but never again. It softened the paint in some areas, but others were unaffected so the result was an uneven surface. And this was after several days of soaking almost completely submerged. Sanding the paint is way easier.Ed

go buy some aerosol paint stripper.
7 bucks at home depot, lowes , etc.

I've never, ever, used brake fluid on parts, especially plastic. Sorry, Chuck, don't mean to sound arrogant, but it's just that it can soak into the plastic and ruin it. Not only can it soften the plastic, but it can prevent it from ever leaving a clean enough surface for paint not to be affected when it's re-sprayed. Jeez..it's just a fender. Break out the sand paper and get to it.. It would take, maybe, 15 minutes to sand it smooth.

True that Larry, but ABS and HDPE are two entirely different animals. AND remember that GS 100 front trim piece i sent you that one time overnight shipping?? Good point, Chuck. Lemme ask you this just out of curiosity. How long was the part I did for you exposed to the brake fluid? Was it soaking for a couple of days, or did you use it to just wipe off the paint you applied. I think what I'm more concerned about is prolonged soaking in the stuff.

Long enough to get the dried up paint i had used..I used a green dish scrubbie, soaked that in the fluid and scrubbed the stuff off. Then i washed it with dish soap and sent it to you within an hr of cleaning it up.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
