Has anyone buffed Spray Max clear?
I have my tank and plastic pieces painted, pinstriped and now clear coated with Spray Max 2k. I was thinking of trying to either wet sand with 1500 grit, or just use some rubbing compound to shine it up a bit more. I painted today, so I wonder how long I should wait before I try it?

You can get up 2000, 2500, and 3000 Trizac 3M sandpaper, too. Im ready to finish my clear and Ill be working my way up to 3000, then rough, fine, and wax compound. I think yould want to wait at least a few days, but Im no body pro. Good luck

Yes but I'd leave it a while before you go at it.... Paint can still be hardening over 3 months or more....
A week absolute minimum is what I would do. I tend to use my painted parts for a few months then go back to them.1980 GS1000G - Sold

Not familiar with your product clear but if you added the hardener and base in correct proportions you can begin cutting it in at 12 hours- usually no longer than 24. You do not want this to completely harden up, you want it to set. Once it hardens it is too hard to cut and polish and you run the risk of burn through. Test on a an inconspicuous area first.
Once it gets cured, it is a bear to cut into!!!! keep your polish wheel damp at all times- I use detail spray instead of water on my bonnets and pads. And 3m gray polish- it's close to 11K grit. Maguires makes great products too.Last edited by Guest; 01-29-2013, 03:12 AM.

I appreciate the replies and read through the link to Badooka shining post. The Spray Max does have the hardener isocyanates in it and the drying time is supposed to be 12 hrs @ 60 degrees F.
I think I'll get some 2000 and higher grit today and work on the area the seat covers on the tank later this evening. Or maybe the gas cap cover as that would be the easiest to repaint if I use the Godzilla method. I'll go with the instructions in the post though as that seems to give me a better chance at the results I'm looking for. That is unless you just want to drive up to Terre Haute Badooka.

I've worked with the Spraymax several times before. Give it a day or two and you should be good to go. Wet sands and buffs just fine. Good luck.

well that told me then... It definitely does not reach full hardness for some time, be careful how you position it to work on.
I've had marks develop in the Spraymax stuff (on the opposite side to the one I was working) even though I was working on a soft surface...1980 GS1000G - Sold

I worked on the gas cap lid and it is a bit early I think. I had to give it another coat of clear. I'll wait for a few days. I think that it looks pretty good now to be honest. It is silver and shines better than my truck does. Very similar color. May just buff out with compound and go from there.

Good deal- I usually put 6 coats down minimum. I have gone as high as 20 coats, but that is for show quality. 6-8 leaves you enough layers without worrying on burn through. Just take your time and be patient. You'll know immediately when you burn it- then the colorful language is not far behind!!!
Always better to be preemptive than post operative!!!!
