best way to paint chromed parts
My hadle bars and exhaust are chromed and have some dots of rust on them. I wanted to know what the best way to paint them black would beTags: None

Or this way to get to bare metal and do any filler work that may be required due to rust pitting ( yes there can be rust under the chrome thats not readily vissible ).
The proceedure is very much the same as removing rust but with different
chemical. First, degrease completely and scrub thoroughly with detergent.
Mix 1 cup of Muriatic acid with 3 gallons of water in a plastic bucket.
NOTE; ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER. NEVER WATER TO ACID !!! (It WILL explode)
Hang two or three copper wires (#12 or larger) around sides of bucket.
Connect these to ground of battery charger. Hang item to be dechromed in
fluid with positive lead connected. Be sure part doesn"t touch ground wires.
Within a few seconds or minutes, depending on thickness of chrome, it should
come clean. More or less time as required. When finnished, wash parts in
mild soda water solution to nutralize acid. (Do this right way to prevent

Thanks ill probly try sanding them this weekend depenfing on how long this airbox takes me to get on... yea that sounds pretty strightchuck pretty much the opesite of off you chrome them probly have to try that at another date

The chrome will literally melt off and sit on the bottom of the bin. The thing that sucks is disposal of the chromium..which is a toxic hazmat in liquid form.
I usually just take it down to the river at midnight and dump it in..then in about 3 weeks i start catching 3 eyed catfish..JK.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Sand blasting is the ticket. You end up with a nice smooth finish to spray the paint onto. Every tiny bit of shine has to be completely gone. Chrome is incredibly hard and sanding takes forEVER..and chances are it still won't adhere. Sand blasting is fast, cheap, no chemicals to deal with, and the paint sticks.Last edited by nvr2old; 03-12-2013, 01:38 AM.1979 GS1000S,

Yes...sometimes the damage isnt that bad and sometimes it is. It kinda a case by case thing reallly. One can look at the part and reasonably guage the severity of the rust effects.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
