    Info on gas tank replacement

Not sure if this is the right place because it does relate TOTALLY to appearance, but it's a question not any information.

So I'm doing basically, a complete rebuilt of my bike right now. The PO didn't know a WHOLE lot about it, but he did say that the tank had been swapped out. There was some scratching on the engine guards so I'm gonna assume it got dropped.

I have a question about some stock tanks, though. My bike is a 1982 GS1100GK, but bobbed (so no windshield, or, well, anything fancy). I've seen a few people on here with GS's that have a "sportbike" tank though, where it has indents on the sides of it for your knees. What model bikes came with this? Is there some sort of tank-interchange index to make sure it will fit in the frame?

I've been searching but can't really find any definitive answers. Ciao!

EDIT : This is a photo I pulled from somebody's signature! Exactly what I'm looking for. He says he has an 850G, so if I can find the equivalent 1000 or 1100 it will fit right?

EDIT2: I just went to drop some stuff off where my bike is and I was looking at the gauges. Are there any aftermarket digital replacement gauges which have a gear-position sensor? That's one of the things I love about her is she always tells me what gear I'm in (yes I know I should remember >.<). See: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...highlight=koso

The stock tank for your GK will have a slightly narrower area for your legs, but they are not really "dents". If that's not what you have, you can look for '82 and up 850G and 1100G, besides the 1100GK. They are all the same.

      Gs1100gk

Welcome to the GSR! I'm sure your official welcome package will be along shortly.

I have spent the better part of a year getting my GS1100GK back to running. Mine also came to me without a front fairing. The answer Steve gave you about the tank is spot on.

As far as your bike goes those tanks pop up on Ebay and on here regularly. The two things you really have to look for are exhaust and a seat. Unless you plan to hack it and make a bobber out of it.

Having said that if you are in need of either of those items then start looking now. My exhaust will finally be ready to put on mine next weekend if all goes well. If not then my search will continue as well. If those are missing then you can wait for the tank to pop up on these sites. Put a post in the Parts wanted section. Secure the other parts as quickly as you can. There is no finishing your bike without them. The 1100G seat will fit your GK, but you will have to work on fitting the bags if you are putting them on.

Also, your GK has a wider front end than the standard 1100G. So fitting a headlight to it will require a little imagination, unless you are getting a stock front fairing. The GK is a different, rare kind of animal, so take stock of the things you need now and make sure you have those parts before you sink a whole lot of money into it and find out how difficult it is to source them later.

Please let us know where you are located and post a picture of your bike. The guys on here have more knowledge about GS's than you will ever need, so ask, search, read, and ask some more. I would have given up a long time ago without this site.

Good luck with your GK rebuild.

        Too late. Re-read his post.

He posted some pictures in another thread that were, quite fankly, hard to see.

It's actually a good thing that they were hard to see, because what I could see was rather disheartening.

          Steve,

I checked out the stock photos of 850's and 1100's and they were not what I was mentioning. I posted that photo in my original thread and also PM'd the owner but I have a feeling it is a different tank from a newer bike.

Don't worry about how she looks now! Just think about the uh, potential? She'll look good eventually.

            Yep, there's PLENTY of that.
