dent puller

I have a smallish dent on the right side of my tank, looks like a knee. Anyone used one of those Dent Kings? I'm thinking I might try it.

I'll let everyone know. I'll take pictures too. you can barely see the dent on picture #2 on my webs site, right up by the seat. Picture #5 it's hidden in the reflection. You can see it pretty clearly in #6

Hi compressed air could work well for you.
you need access to high pressure air,I did a tank for an old rd350.
I stuck the airgun in to the gas cap hole and sealed it with a rag.
Slowly increase the pressure and if your'e lucky it will pop out.
Sometimes having a buddy who can tap the surrounding area of the dent with a mallet will help.
You shake lose the molecules in the metal,being a dent the material has been stretched and taping will release the tension.

Good idea! Just be sure to empty the tank and/or close the petcock well first!

Whatever you do, don't pressurize the tank. Yes you'll get rid of the dent, but you'll also spread the front of the tank apart so far that it won't sit on the rubbers anymore. Trust me on this one, GS tanks can't be pressurized.....

Don't bother with the dent king, the best thing to use for this problem is a welding stud puller gimmick, sorry forgeot the technical name, they run about 100 dollars at harbor freight tools. www.harborfreight.com Simply weldon a stud and use as a dent puller then grind down to surface and repaint. Or just live with it.

I've heard that those "ding kings" are a complete waste of time and money...

I think Harbor freight has the stud welder on sale right now for $89 ... at least they did recently.

Dent Wizard did wonders on my car. They are definetly not a complete waste of time or money. I don't know how well it would work on a motorcycle tank though.

One of the car magazines tested the product and said it failed miserably, but your experience certainly proves that you can never tell ... by the way, I also read or heard somewhere that if you use oil instead of water or hot glue under the suction cup you'll get the advantage of the glue suction-wise but it will be easier to remove (assuming it doesn't "pop" the way some of the TV examples did).

It would be interesting to hear more detail regarding the stuff you did to your car, dedfish.

I'm talking about a professional dent repair service, not a "as seen on tv" toy. Sorry for any confusion. I wouldn't trust or even waste my money on a suction cup toy. The professional paintless dent repair places use a long metal rod to fish between your car panels to push from the dent out from the inside as part of their process.

I got a ding king a few months ago for like $5 (I figured why not) and I just tested it finally on a dent in my tank, and it pulled the dent out about 95%... it all depends on the dent though
