    Engine bolt/screw set

Since I'll have to remove every cover to clean them up, I'm thinking of dressing up the project bike with some SS screws. I found these on ebay. Does anyone sell a similar set for less?

I checked and it seems that Z1 only sells the screws as individuals and no longer sells screw sets.

Seems that $38 shipped for the ebay ones is a fair price.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

Thanks. I looked everywhere on their site but couldn't find them. Not listed when you look for model specific information. Once you posted the link I did a search for "Engine Bolt gs1000" and it came up with what you posted. Edit: Did find them on page 3 of the engine section for a GS1000GT.

Their kits only include 56 bolts and 3 hex keys and with shipping goes for $33.01. Don't really need the keys but oh well. The kit I posted comes with no keys but includes 92 bolts and is $37.99 delivered. It even includes the bolts you can't see.

I guess it comes down to how complete a kit I want may go with the Z1 kit but now sure yet.

Let me know how these look once you get them. I'm interested in taking an inventory myself and posting them up with individual links so you can buy what you need at a local hardware store if possible.

The Z1 kits are always a good choice and there is another Ebay seller that I have also gotten nice kits from that goes by Rustyriders or something really close.

I have used the rusty rider kits before. Now I keep my own stock of fasterners from McMaster Carr on hand. It's a money saver

I know this is somewhat an old post, but I wanted to provide more information to those buying bolt kits. The seller on eBay includes washers for every bolt - doubling the number of pieces in their kits. There are multiple issues using washers on many of the bolts on engine covers.

First, the washer shortens the useable thread by approximately 1.6mm (the washer thickness) - that's one and a half turns of thread bite you are losing - or roughly 20% of the bolts effective holding power.
Second, the washers are 12mm diameter - both original JIS pan-head bolts and Allen head stainless bolts have 10mm diameter heads. In some areas where the bolt is recessed into a casting, the larger diameter washers can interfere with the bolt tightening up effectively as the washer cannot sit flat on the engine cover surface.
Third, cosmetically the bolts with washers don't look as nice as just the polished socket head bolts on their own.

Most time the only reason to use a washer is where you cannot get the exact length bolt, and you need to shorten the effective length of a bolt without cutting it.

A really nice benefit of Z1's hardware is you can buy as few or as many pieces as you want at a really good price. I have not found many online retailers who will send you single pieces for only a few cents a piece. I have not had Z1's hardware long enough to put the corrosion resistance to the test, but the hardware does look and feel really nice (and this is coming from a guy who gets to play with superalloys at work).

That is a good point about the washers increasing the amount of hardware from the eBay seller. It makes the $24 set at Z1 look like a no-brainer if you want polished stainless SHCS.

seems like not many washers are supplied

if you check the ebay item he lists what cover and how many bolts are supplied to suit
seems most of whats supplied is bolts not washers

                    Bolt size decoding

I took a look at Alpha Sports' fische this morning - in the crankcase cover section they actually list the bolt sizes.

This was the only page in the fische that listed diameters and lengths. For many bolts around the engine, 4 of the last 5 digits tell you the size. For example:

                    P/N 01517-06458 is 6x45mm
                    P/N 01517-05308 is 5x30mm

So you can look at part numbers and get a rough idea of what bolt size you need. This isn't always the case but for the visible cap screws it mostly applies. Obviously you should validate that against what you find on the bike.

Note that thread pitch is not given.

At least on my bike, the 01547-XXXXX are JIS or something with a smaller head. These are used on the crankcase covers.

Interestingly, many of the bosses on the bike are sized for the smaller diameter heads. The crankcase bolts themselves are not reduced heads, but many of the bosses in the case are smaller than the bolt heads. Because of this, there is no real clamp force reduction when using socket head cap screws; SHCS basically has the same diameter head as a JIS flanged cap screw. Originally I was not crazy about the idea of switching to SHCS because of the reduced clamp area but now I see the actual interface stays the same in many places.
