Retrofitting Questions - 1000 body on 1100

I had started a thread on this in projects but didn't get any help yet so thought maybe it was because of the way I titles and categorized it. See link to projects and questions below.

There has to be somebody who has done this? or crammed an 1100 in a 1000 which would cause the same situation.

Before I start welding things on I wondered if anyone has done this before?

What was the best practice for relocating the petcock or lowering the carbs?

Alternatively, would 29mm smoothbores be as good on this bike as the stock carbs?

...and last but not least, does welding on a frame while the electronics are on the bike damage the electronics? I know I will end up pulling everythi8ng off to clean and paint the frame, spiff up the engine etc.... but would like to tack everything up before then.

1 issue you will have if you try mounting the gs1000 tank on a 1100 rolling chassis is the fuel tank
from memory only 99% sure i tried this back about 1983!
because the 1100 uses leading axle front forks the triple clamps have shorter offset and fork legs will hit the tank

again from memory the 1100 fits in the 1000 frame i think 1 mount had to be altered

you cannot lower the carbs
why move the tap ? it should clear everything if your running pods

only problem with 29mm smoothies are your 1100 manifolds are to big you can use adapters to fit up, some say it shouldnt be done(using carb smaller than manifold size) but on 1 of my harris magnums its been done and works no problem gives the bike great low down power 33mm smoothbores tend to kill your low down grunt on fairly stock 1100s

Good thing to check, I hadn't thought of it, but nope it has plenty of clearance. I cut off the 1100 tank tabs and used the hole in the frame to mount tabs (round rubbers) in the same spot they are on the 78gs1000.

You could also think about relocating the Petcock....

When I fitted an 82 1100 tank on my Skunk I raised the end of the tank up slighty & ground on the petcock (stock 1100) and the carb top to create clearance.

Interestingly the 750ES petcock I had would allow more room but it looked....

I guess what I'm saying is that you can likely make it work somehow.

You could maybe use an adapter plate to move the petcock or even cut a completely new hole or get some kind of fitting to blank it off & mount a petcock remotely perhaps...

I have that tank on my '80 1000E, it fits fine. It's the one with the petcock just forward of the carbs.

I am putting a gs1000 tank on an 821100e frame. There are pics in the projects section under FAUX Skunk project...

maybe I ought to remove this thread, I just got anxious to hear opinions and experience.

That's a '78 1000 tank. They are relatively easy to find, they sold a lot of 1000s in '78. Even more in '79. In '80 not so many, the 1100E was out. Who would buy the 1000E when 1100Es were available?

I am not selling it I am keeping this one. I don't like the style or feel of the 82 and up E's.

I think the 1982 "alien" look is not for me.

I also like the sitting position closer to the steering stem of the gs1000.
