    Removing Paint from Engine Parts

I just acquired some engine parts upon which someone did some very poor painting. It'll probably come off with paint remover. Before I jump into this, I thought it might be worth asking if there is any possibility that metal might be damaged. Are there any other potential problems?

    Thanks.

Gasoline - effective on some paints but dangerous
Carb cleaner - effective on some paints but expensive
Glycol-based brake fluid - effective on some paints
          Sandpaper - effective but tiring
Scotchbrite - probably effective and tiring
Sandblaster - effective but high initial cost, and you have to make sure no sand gets left behind (it will tear the hell out of an engine)

The fluids will not damage aluminum. They may damage chrome or other electroplating.

Abrasives all alter the surface of the metal, but are your best bet to really clean up the surface.
