A bit of a pain especially if they next gas is 100 miles away and you have to stop even if you have 3/4 of a tank.

If you are creative and do some looking tourtanks make external fuel tanks for bikes. They would sit either on a rear rack or on the back seat and depending on the size could double your avaliable fuel. I've never used one but understand you can plumb it into your fuel system and turn it on or off as easy as turning on your reserve pickup.

(Don't feel too bad though. Years ago, I put a ZL1000 tank on my ZL900, since I was going on reserve at 75 miles.)

Depends on how wide open he running it. 100 miles might be all you will get. It might also be running like crapped too. A 1000l will pretty much pass anything except a gas station!

My 79 1000L gets 38mpg in the city, so 120 miles per tank in the city. On long rides I get about 50mpg and fill up every 150 miles, give or take a few, with about .5 gallons left in the tank.

Usually, depending on how I ride, I put in 3.2/3.1 gallons in at 120 miles on the tank. I am a very spirited rider. Here in Houston, you go 80mph or you get run over by the big trucks. If you aren't getting these numbers, you need to revisit those carbs.
