Make that zinc plating kit. Cadmium is highly toxic and all but obsolete.

Caswell's Plating has a zinc kit. You can do it cheaper though by purchasing the Caswell's electrolyte and brightener, and putting together your own bucket, pump, zinc plates, etc.

Take a look at this thread, you'll be inspired by this guy's work:

Zinc plating work begins on page 13.

Replating would be the ideal thing, but if you just want to get the rusty crud off for now till thats possible, put them in a container and cover with vinegar for a day or two when its gonna be bad riding weather. Some steel wool and they will be "OK" for now.

But replating is the way to really go.

I've painted bolt and screw heads,it just doesn't work very goodStarted zinc plating them and I'm much happier with that.

How can it begin on page 13 when there are only 8 pages in the thread?

Not everybody has the same page settings, please give the post number, not the page number.

                    That's an interesting trick...

I've had a bit of success using Never Dull polishing batting (comes in a metal can). It cuts the crud and leaves a nice shine as well. It is a little labor intensive though but, hey, we're talking about motorcycles. It comes with the territory.
