Black chrome / ceramic coat

Hey all. I am in need of redoing my exhaust. Its currently original black chrome from 1984. Looks like my only option is to go with ceramic coating. (professionally done) Any comments/experience with having this done to your black chrome exhaust? Thanks

I had the pipes on my KZ750 done and they look good. A patch on one of the header pipes blistered right away though. They are not very "tough" against chips either. Better than normal paint I suppose but they don't meet my unconditional approval either.

A chrome shop won't touch a used system, but ceramic coating is not a problem.

I just got two projects back from the ceramic shop. My son found a tri-Y header for his bike, but the end of the muffler was right at the front of the right saddlebag, so we got a piece of pipe from the muffler shop, bent it, cut it and had it ceramic coated black to match the rest of the system. Haven't fired it up yet, let alone tested longevity, but it looks great for now.

The second project is a set of pipes for my wife's bike. The baffles are rattling in her pipes. I found a set for a '79 850G and had them ceramic coated in bright silver. It's not quite as shiny as chrome, but it's certainly a LOT better than what's on her bike now.

Bottom line, ceramic coating (either silver or black) is fine on a used exhaust system.

You can get a matte, satin or gloss black ceramic finish.
Powder coating will not stand up to exhaust temps.

Seeing as you are in Toronto, if you are thinking of using Fireball Coatings, make sure to do a thorough check of customer reviews.

thanks Steve....I did call Fireball...their price seems reasonable...satin is all they can do...about $300, maybe less as they would only do the outside of an original exhaust. Have you heard negative things about them. If its the same place he is in Erin Ontario...correct? Also, have you heard anything good bad about Flashfire in Whitby ? Thanks Steve

The negative stories i have seen about Fireball include poor follow-up when things go wrong and bad time-lines.
Jobs taking much longer than promised.

thanks Steve....found another coater in Ajax, was recommended to me, called Atlantic Heat Treating. I called them up and the owner talked with me. Seems good on the phone and their shop seems very large and professional based on the photos from their web site. Owner actually emailed me some pics of the exhausts they have done. Looks pretty good and a little cheaper. Quoted $225 to do the complete stock exhaust. Also mentioned they have samples at the shop to look at. No gloss black though. Thanks for your help Steve
