Looking for opinions on paint gun

I come to you tonight to solicit opinions on buying a paint sprayer. I have been looking on Amazon and it seems they have lots of different brands and price ranges to choose from. How expensive should I go? I am thinking you probably get what you pay for but just how much is really necessary?

I figured I probably would be better off if I avoid Harbor Freight. Yes or No?

What size spray tip would do for painting a tank on my GS? Would I be OK in selecting a small touch up sprayer with a tip size of 0.8mm?

Just seeking opinions from some of the painting gurus on the forum. Thanks for giving your thoughts.

What do you have for a compressor, painting space, filters, etc.?

I bought a cheap Chinese HVLP set a number of years ago that works better than I am capable of so I don't know that buying expensive is that worthwhile unless you plan to use it for business purposes.

Compressor is a craftsman 5.5hp with 25 gal tank. Painting space will be the 3rd stall of my 3 car garage and I will be using a filter ahead of the gun to trap any moisture in the line. I'm thinking of an HVLP gun. Will have lots of plastic sheeting around to catch the majority of overspray and will also be using good exhaust fans.
Not looking at making a business out of this, just some occasional hobby work. Right now just looking at repainting the tank on my GS.

Dale has bought several nice guns off ebay. I'd drop him a note and ask for an opinion.

Rusty. If Dogma knows about painting I'd ask him too.

That sounds like a decent start. I found that using a pressure regulator right at the gun was a big help because the pressures are low and the regulator on the tank wasn't precise enough.

Well, here's a measure of my knowledge of the topic. I saw the thread subject and came here to recommend a used Tippmann 98.

Curious what folks recommend... I'm almost to the point in my build where I'm going to paint the tank, so I'm in the same boat as you are, Larry.

I've got a Sata Minijet and DeVilbiss EGA suction feed touch up gun that's about 20 years old. Prices are getting pretty high on the Sata's these days but you can find them used on ebay for halfway reasonable prices. Sharpe Finex guns are cheap and should be decent enough. No doubt there are lots of others.

Below shows the type of DeVelbiss gun I have. It works great and is very durable. The photo is not my gun. Mine is much prettier! LOL. Just posting to show that's out there. I've seen guns like these selling for $50 on ebay. You don't need to spend hundreds to get a decent gun.

After using guns of every price range for years when HVLP came around I went with Lowe’s, Kobalt top cup gravity feed. $50. Works as good as any others I’ve tried.

Plus 1. Good gun for a very affordable price. Comes with the right size tip for most applications. The $20 HF guns work well as primer guns.
