Can someone explain OEM Engine color schemes?

I have an 81 GS850(?) that has the natural aluminum color. My 83 GS850(?) has a black engine. At first I thought it was painted by a PO but I've seen many other bikes that also have black engines. Is this a "trim" level option/indicator? Or just a difference between years? Or both? I'm just curious. Thanks guys!

83, and only 83s had black engines, all models.

Actually, it started with the '83 bikes, but continued with '84, '85, etc., not "just" the '83s.

I like the look of the black engine with 'chrome' accents, so I painted my wife's engine many, many years ago.
I still like the look, so I painted MY engine a few years ago.
The "like" continues, I painted my son's engine last year.

I need to update my son's picture, but you can see my bike and my wife's bike by clicking on the links in my sig.
