    Silver engine paint

    Hi all
    my engine is stripped to the bare cases for a crank change so I thought I would paint them while I can, what have people used and with what results to get the best appearance to as new and a lacquer to go on if required ?

    There are many many threads on this subject. The search function will turn up more than you care to read.

    VHT has a silver paint that closely matches the original only it's durability is not good; it chips easily and doesn't resist gasoline particularly well. Using some sort of catalyzed engine paint like eastwood would be more durable, but quite a bit more effort overall considering the prep and equipment required.

        I used VHT on my 673 conversion with their primer too. Seems to hold up well so far.

          I use VHT UNIVERSAL ALUMINUM. Part number SP127 and have no issues. It's all in how clean the metal is AND how it's cured. I paint and let it dry 2 days. Start engine and FEEL the head find. Once they get almost too hot to leave your hand on shut it off and let cool completely

          Start again but go maybe 10 to 15 minutes...note that should you see a whisp of smoke shut it off and let it cool. The idea is to run it thru a few heat cycles to bake it on. you get the idea. After 2 or 3 good cycles just take it out for a good 20 mile ride and you'll be just fine.

          One thing I do before paint is to use a new parts brush and douche the engine well to get every possible hint of oil or grease off.

          I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
