    1983 GS850GLD Dilemma

After more than 10 years of ownership and avoidance, I now have time to tackle the GS. I've learned much from fellow members; thank you. Time for my first post!
Background: 15K miles on the clock which I've driven maybe 300. Bike is stock (except as noted), clean, good electrical (other than R/R), no guts however.
Alternator phases all good at 75+ VAC, but have not inspected stator visually for over-heating. Charging at 20VDC . Genuine used SH775 ordered from eBay. Must say http://roadstercycle.com/ is out of these. Jack is only selling SH847's of the open type. More than needed for 850.
I do need to do tappets. Most are tight. I'll use the wire-tie method. Don't want to slip with a tool I don't have.
On to the dilemma. I've assumed intake issues from the start. Replaced intake rubbers and O-rings. Cleaned carbs, found two pilot jets clogged. Now runs without "choke". I did realize the "choke" is not an air choke, so running starter circuit only adds fuel, does not restrict air. Lesson learned.
Jets, however, are two sizes too big. Mains are 125, pilots 45. I don't see any reason why. PO's mechanic must have done it long ago when he took it to the shop to get it running, as I recall. Everything else is stock, intake and exhaust. I can find 115 mains on the interweb, but I can't locate any 40 pilots. So, the dilemma.
I'd like to bring it back to stock. I assume I'd be happy with stock performance. Yes, I'll get to the valves but thoughts on jetting? Any good reason NOT to bring it back to stock?

    Update:
Installed SH775 with connector kit from Jack. Stayed with stock wiring. I'll monitor/maintain. 14.1VDC max (5000RPM) no lights, 14.3V max lights on. Nothing below 13V at idle as I recall. I'm happy.
    Tappets done.
Talked to local dealer about jets and he recommended J&L Supply from Japan. Found (4) new 18-2591's on eBay for $33 total, shipped. All stock, 115 mains and 40 pilots, nice kits.
Other than running terrible when cold and still tweaking pilot screws, runs great above 4K. At 1-1/2 out on pilots now, I'm in the ballpark. Need more miles.
Pleasantly surprised and happy with stock performance. If I need to get somewhere quickly and close, I'll hop on the Triumph. Suzuki has the shaft and weight advantage for the highway for sure but not low end torque. Definitely going to put most all miles on the GS now. Finally fun and comfortable ride.

Well done and good on you for doing your research on the forum. You had an opportunity to remove the headlamp loop and run all 3 stator legs to the SH775. If I understand “Stayed with stock wiring. I'll monitor/maintain”, you left that loop in the system? Should be fine if your connections are solid, without resistance/heat causing corrosion and your grounds are good. Just keep and eye on things for melted insulation around those connections.

Now you are hereby obligated to show us pictures, and I want to read and see more about your Triumph.

TY Rich. Yes, I had the opportunity, but left it. For a very long time, my meter (of many iterations) has been my best friend.

          The Trident

          I'm enjoying them both.
I'll see what I can do about Triumph updates. Had similar charging issues with it. Needed rotor (weak magnets), stator (16A upgrade) and R/R (upgrade). Zener and heatsink proudly presented below headlamp is gone, though thinking of bolting it back up. Looks bare. Otherwise, could use a new chain and the dry sump doesn't stay dry after a while. Have replaced ball and spring. Don't remember doing ball seat yet, if possible. Turn signals lost/stolen after removal many miles ago. New carbs a couple years back, slides worn. Remaining stock except headers. A few oil weeps up top. Could brighten the aluminum someday too.
Y'all Have a safe and pleasant Memorial Day!

Exactly the same as my 83 850L. Love it! Although yours looks much cleaner. Enjoy riding it!
