    Re installing sending unit

My 82 1100E is just about done with the paint, I plan to install the tank this weekend. When I stripped down last weekend I pulled the sending unit out. I have tried for days to find a new rubber o gasket but could not find anywhere. The old one is a little tired looking but not torn. Does anyone recommend any sealer when I install back this weekend? If so what kind and where? I want to thank all of you all for your input and me getting my old dream bike up and running! I cant wait to do some fall riding on her this year. Brian

If the O ring is in good shape you shouldn't need any sealer. I've never used any.

Should be a flat gasket on the sending unit, I don't remember an "O" ring. If a round, flat gasket, it shouldn't be a problem to make a new one, especially if you have an untorn one to use for a pattern.

How about some pics of your bike, which BTW is the pinnacle of air cooled superbikedom?

I looked at the 82 GS1100E on partzilla and they don't show a sending unit for that model. Now I have an 82 GS1100GL which does have a sending unit that is used on many other bikes and it looks like this and is available. I would replace it.

Sending Unit and its gasket are on the fuel cock page and the full round one (#9) is still available. The half-round gasket (#13) is apparently not.

Partzilla does, in fact, show both # 9 & # 13 gaskets as available.
