Not in my experience. Only gross leaks show up with spraying junk on the carbs.

I always spray with the long red thin nozzle, and pin point every spot. If any air is sucking through the carbs, it will rev up. It's not like a British car, which passes by a gas station and revs up, but there's an increase if there;s a leak, it is was not discernible, it wouldn't affect the bike's performance..

I recleaned, reringed, and during assembly a thought came to me, that those little hockey pucks under the float bowl just might be leaking. So I replaced those hard little discs with O rings filled with RTV and let set overnight.

I spent most of the day tuning the old girl. I am happy to report that she idles and has a snappy throttle again with no hint of a vac leak.

Now to go for a ride.

Hope it's back like it should be... But will still be wondering what the problem actually was?.

well all things being equal, the only change that I made was replacing those rock hard hockey pucks.

My mistake, I thought you'd also recleaned and and installed new "O" rings.

The hockey pucks.. are you referring to the pilot jet port plugs?

I'm wondering too. I thought he was referring to the donut rubber seals that seal the tapered plug below the gasket surface.

Those are not what I replaced, it’s the ones covering the aluminum plug under the float bowl, a ring actually.

I found a Kawasaki PN for those missing donut seals, but they are discontinued. Suzuki doesn't show them on the parts fishe. I have made them before from a sheet of viton I've got lying around and that worked well.

What ring are we discussing here? Is it only on OPs model of bike or is it on other models as well? My 850L perhaps? I don't recall seeing this seal when rebuilding my carbs...

Could someone post a picture of what Vince is talking about. I thought I understood twice while reading this thread, both times wrong. Now I’m really confused. Nothing unusual about that, though.

Not all GS carbs have these. I'm not sure what the deal is. Most of the time the aluminum plug is driven in tight and seals air tight, thus no need for these. The photo looks like a fat O-ring, but these are flat. And BTW, only certain types of RTV are gas resistant. Project Farm had a sealer test that discusses this. Personally, I wouldn't use RTV since it may only be a temporary fix.

BTW, this PN if from Kawasaki
