Answer to my issue. The rubber check valve (#5) does not hold in my petcock for prime.

If I'm understanding this right, with Uncategorized Groups not holding vacuum, your petcock will work the same in PRI as in ON.

I've had the same problem with those petcocks. Even new and/or low mileage ones.

I had the problem with an OEM one I got for my GS1100E. It was over $100 from Partzilla, sat on shelf a while as the bike was rebuilt so it was past return date. I put a T fitting on it and used a MityVac when needed. Really disappointing though. Then I got a cheap Amazon one for my GS1000 and it never gave any trouble.

Would like to get a vacuum with a lever, but everyone I find has the line fittings on the wrong side. looks like it is specific to this vintage. I will keep looking for another month, then back together for riding!

This one, for a GSX400EX, has the pipe facing fwd...but they are chunky ..and many places will offer the wrong one as replacement:
part 44300-44171 (below) is NOT the same as 44300-4470 even if the screw-hole fit is the same. i don't know where to get a new 44171-with similar difficulties part-wise,I had to rebuild mine

Has anyone changed the the petcock over on this model and year? It is in a different location on others.

The leverless petcock uses 50mm bolt spacing. I'm unaware of any other petcocks that have this spacing. Also realize, Suzuki went to that petcock because of carb clearance issues. If you change up, make sure you will have clearance.

There is a miniature type manual Bulb primer pump, like the ones used on small boats, it might fit in line of the fuel line. $6 bucks.

Problem solved. Ordered a new vacuum petcock from Everett Motorsports. Works as designed. Prime is slot vertical. Crank enough to get vacuum and it stays open until turned horizontal for run. Then shuts off when engine is shut down.
