On GSR we have/had the "shim club".
I do not know if it's still active but they offered a swap at low cost -
may be worth it to search this forum.

        Tried Z1, but I didn't see a selection, just a few individuals.

Several sellers for complete sets, like K&L and some German companies.
My advice, steer clear of aftermarket ones because of the difficulty putting them in. Thank me later !

This i would buy in a heartbeat if sold on my side of the big pond :

The box is worth the asking price.
Lots of shims AND the valve tool. No-brainer for me. (I have 3 original boxes with original tool and shims so i'll pass on this one)

A propos valve tool : the original Suzuki tool is a good one.
The aftermarket tools i tried were not hardened properly and would be hard to use after a couple of uses.
Original tool is hard to find and expensive.

Did i say what a great deal 2040-parts is offering here ?

The "zip tie" method works just fine! If you don't know how that works do a YouTube search for Suzuki valve shim zip tie and get a real life demonstration.

              1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)
              1982 GS450txz (former bike)
LONG list of previous bikes not listed here.

I identify as a man but according to the label on a box of Stauffers Baked Lasagne I'm actually a family of four

I know, used the method on occasion but for this job i prefer the Suzuki tool.
It's just that some tools make doing the job more enjoyable for me.

Before chasing many other potential causes, with the engine running, spray starting fluid (quick start) into the suspect cylinder and see if it fires.

OK, I am obviously missing something here..... my 78 1000 is not firing on cylinder 3. I just shimmed all valves at 2 thousandths clearance, new plugs, swapped the carb bank for a good working set, swapped coils, 145psi compression, sprayed starting fluid all around. I have no idea what else to check here. Am I missing something??

Does the cylinder fire with starter fluid? If not, you have a spark problem.

The bike runs on 3 cylinders, no spark issue as I have had 2 different set of coils on it.

Have you checked to make sure you have fuel in the # 3 carb bowl? I had the same issue and the float valve was stuck closed! Just my .02!

When I die, just cremate me and put me in my GS tank. That way I can go through these carbs, one more time!https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/core/images/smilies/cool.png

Already had two sets of carbs that ran good on a 750 on the 1000, so it's or a fuel or spark issue.

Fuel or spark? That narrows it down!

The cylinder is getting fuel, spark, and it has good compression. Since I've already set the valves, the only other thing I can think of is something internal mechanical, so I'm baffled.
