Do I always have to use OEM parts?

...My carbs are stipped down, nearly clean and I'm in the process of replacing parts that need replacing.

Shout out to Nessim for his O-Ring kits and Zed1015 for his choke plunger service.

Now then, I've got a question...

You see, I'm keen to buy OEM replacement parts...

...However, when looking at the total of my parts from CMSNL I nearly spat my coffee out.

Hopefully, you can see why from the photo below:

What the hell?

Is this hose made from the tears of Angry Kung Fu Unicorns?

Because £50 for two bits of hose, approx 40cm in length and 8,5mm in diameter seems outrageous to me.

Like I said, I'm keen to buy OEM whenever possible, but I'm struggling to make sense of this.

What am I missing?

Or can I simply replace it with --> This <-- £3.60 for one metre.

I'm a total newbie to the world of motorcycle wrenching, so any light you can shed on this would be very illuminating.

Personally I think you'd be just fine using that. Some people would say that reinforced rubber lines will break down over time and the bits of rubber will dissolve and get into your carburetor and they have a point. The way around that problem is to replace those lines every few years.

I'm not sure WHAT that hose you linked is made from, either way go for it! At that price you won't be out much if it only lasts a couple of years.

That hose PN has been superseded by 09354-65113-600. It costs about $12 each in the USA. Bummer to see the price double for you.

Those hoses are for carb bowl venting. You need a hose that's for a PVC system, or fuel line is okay. I would get the aftermarket stuff.

You don't "have" to buy OEM. Suzuki don't make rubber hoses, they buy them in, so you can buy them in also. It's a part of what's called reverse engineering, it's the ability to identify an alternative that meets or exceeds the OEM spec.

For a carb breather hose I would be happy to use any NBR hose that fits, unless the resto was to concours standards.

Look at the part number that Nessism posted. The first couple of digits after the hyphen are the inside diameter, or 6.5. Over there, you are probably more likely to find actual 6.5mm ID hose, over here, we would probably settle for 1/4" hose and stretch it on.
