Stock Airbox Parts '82 GS650G

I was originally thinking about going with pod filters on each carb, but after looking through the recommended technical info on the forums I've decided against it. However, I do have a couple questions regarding the stock airbox.

First being, how in the world does the stock air filter (the foam one) stay inside the airbox? Do you just stick it in and it should stay attached? It doesn't seem like there is much in the way of attachment points in the airbox or on the filter.

Second being, I see pictures here and there of a cover that closes off the airbox and when I purchased my bike it didn't have one. Does that factor in with my first question? If it doesn't assist with keeping the air filter in place, is it necessary? Or just to keep the filter from sucking up extra dirt/pollen/dust/etc to keep it from getting dirty quickly?

Sorry if this has already been discussed but after searching around a bit I couldn't find anything.

OOhhh, never seen one but have read here at GSR there's one of the GS650's that has some kind of "cage" that filter goes on, and they are almost impossible to find...Hoping I'm wrong. Somebody here has the info.

Yep, the cover holds the filter in place. The cover has a "D" shaped internal ridge that locates against the filter/cage assembly, so the filter is 'sandwiched' between the cover and back of the airbox. The cover its self is held in place with two sliding metal clips.

Well crap, it sounds like that cover is pretty necessary haha. Any chance someone around here has good leads on where to find one? I have not had much success as of yet.

Sorry, fella! For the number of vintage jap bikes that run pods, you'd think there must be a pile of air-boxes somewhere?

Lol, you would really think so. I'm going to try my hand at making one, since it just needs to seal off the airbox and hold the filter in place. If that doesn't work I may go with pods anyways I guess.
