Not enough slack in throttle cable - 1979 GS1000L

I have a 1979 GS1000 and don't have enough slack in my throttle cables. I took the carbs and throttle components apart to clean them. Prior to this the throttle cable was plenty long enough. The cable fits but the sliders are wide open. I am wondering if I messed up assembling them.

As mentioned in your other thread about carbs, those are not the original carbs. This photo, unlike your other, do show mechanical slide carbs. You should buy a set of stock carbs, then rebuild them.

No wonder the throttle cables didn't fit. Yikes.

Keihen keyhole carbs! It's a Honda conspiracy.

Cable looks attached in the wrong spot (threaded section), and going the wrong way around, and the end in the wrong hole.

But that's from just looking at what I can see in the photos...
