Ok someone help me out here...CARBS
its been a while since I have actually had this problem, and its rather frustrating me because I have worked on so many of these I should know better, BUT... I recently installed BS36SS carbs on my 1100ES. The carbs were all dipped for a day or so each, blown out with air, scrubbed, and wire cleaned out all the passages. Im running pods (the APE KN knock offs, just to try em out, brand new) a Stage 3 Kit, 138 mains, stock pilots (as per the DJ instructions) Went to fire the bike today and its firing on only two cylinders as far as I can tell. Two and Four have nice warm pipes, and one and three are cold. This bike ran like a champ all last season, and ive done nothing mechanically other than the carb swap thus far. I knew that it SHOULDNT be coils, cause they're firing on opposite coils, but i checked my connections anyway. Everything appears to be straight... What am I over looking?? You get to the point when you've worked on so many of these damn old girls that you start forgetting some simple this and thats at times, and I feel like thats my problem.. Any suggestions?Tags: None

Josh,
Did you shoot carb spray up the choke tube passage to verify they are open? Hold the pilot jets up to a light to make sure they are open too?Ed

Don't forget to shoot carb spray though the choke feed tubes - it should come out inside the choke passage where the plunger fits. Those passages are easily clogged.Ed

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here but I'm talking about these passages...they need to be open all the way to the choke plunger cavity. Also, the small passage in the float bowl needs to be open too; that pick up tube fits down in a tunnel in the floatbowl.

yeah I have cleaned all those fellas.. This aint my first rodeoNow she'll run, on choke, feed any throttle and she croaks, take her off choke and she croaks.. i sprayed carb cleaner through every orifice and it came out clean and metered on every carb. Float levels are ALL exactly at 22.5mm (i know stock is 22.4, but getting every one of those on an oddball number with cheap digital calipers is kinda tough) inlet seats were pulled, cleaned, new orings all the way through.
So, after checking them again, Ed, you must have been on to something, cause before she only fired on two. Now all four are hot, but she wont run off choke, and wont accept throttle without bogging out. Adjustment screws are set at 3 turns out, simply because im running pods and a pipe. Maybe im too rich there?... Bench sync is as close as i could humanly get it. And frankly on choke she runs pretty damn smooth at 2K RPM. so i dont think its a sync issue. Of course i havent dynamic synced it yet.. Time for lunch, I will mill it over...any suggestions are appreciated guys. I know I know all this stuff, but im one of those that sometimes cant see the forest for all those damn trees...

See this is why I still come to this place despite all the P/R thread juggernaughts who made me start to dislike this forum. It's bouncing things off other heads that always helps me out. So I was on the phone with steve. Runningthrough everything again to make sure I didn't miss something stupid or simple. And guess what, I did. I forgot that when I painted the carbs after cleaning them I covered up the bowl vent tubes with tape. The tape got painted black, just like the rest of the carbs and I forgot to remove the tape. Bowls were never getting full because they were pressurizing with the vents covered up. Removes the tape reinstalled the carbs and she runs and blips and even ran up the blockgotta tune and tweak em a bit but she's feeling pretty good already. Those 36mm carbs pack a hell of a wallop up top even with no other mods. Easy extra power if you can grab a set! Thanks for the heads fellas I do appreciate it.
