Fuel Sending Unit Sealer Suggestions
I have developed a small leak on part # 22. It is the round plastic piece that goes through the metal plate that one of the sending wires attaches to. The OEM seal appears to have been a brown colored bead of sealant that has failed. It will be exposed to gas all the time and I was wondering what would be best material to use to seal this up. I have some Hylomar I was going to use to seal it with but was wondering if another type of sealant would better suited for this application. Ideally it would seal dissimilar surfaces together, and not be affected by constant exposure to fuel, temperature fluctuations, and vibration. Thanks

There's a sealant called Seal-All (IIRC) that is specifically for sealing fuel leaks. It's cheap, comes in small contianers and is impervious to gas. A drop of that would probably work.'84 GS750EF (Oct 2015 BOM) '79 GS1000N (June 2007 BOM) My Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/soates50/

Sandy, thanks for the tip. I had some of the Permatex Hylomar type gasket sealer on hand and tried it out last night so hopefully it works. If is does not work I will give the Seal-All a try.

Early Results
The Hylomar seems to be working, I put it on Friday evening and let it set up overnight before putting gas back in to the tank.(approx 14 hours) It dries to a tacky almost rubber cement like consistancy. I have put about 50 miles on it so far and went out this morning and no drips overnight from the overflow tube.

Is the gasket the problem or something else?? I just replaced my gasket #23 and have no problems with leaks. I didn't have any problems prior to the replacement but i just had my tank painted and the old gasket had seen better days so i replaced it just because.
There is also another gasket (#27) i replaced because i never had one on since me owning the bike. It's labelled as a fuel leak gasket. I have no idea, just replaced it because.1979 GS850G

I have to repair a 1980 850 this weekend and I need new gaskets for the fuel sending unit. Anyone know where I can find the part numbers and prices in the central U.S? Online microfiches I look at just have the tank, no sending unit...
I need #23 and #27 in the parts shark.com link.
How do you tell the specific model of this bike? Like 1981 GS850GL or GX?Last edited by Guest; 07-07-2010, 11:26 AM.

The L or G designation is in the Vin. The fuel gauges are all the same size between several models and years. You can order the gasket (OEM) from your local stealership if they're any good at all. Even Brothers Motorsports in Brainerd is able to accomplish that when I have to resort to using them. I'm currently waiting on two exhaust pipe gaskets that I ordered from them for the collector to header connections.
Another way to tell an L from a G is the handlebars , seat and tank. The tank is a 3.2 gal peanut tank on the L until '82, the G has a huge 5.8 gal tank, the seat on an L is a stepped banana seat, the G has a flat seat, the L has pull back style handlebars.........
