did anyone find a bigger tank for a 1980 gs1100l?
i am trying to find a bigger tank for my 1980 gs1100L. atm has most of you know, my tank is only 2 gallons and the gas milage i will be getting is only 30 to maybe 35 miles per gallon. so that's puts me to get me a new bigger tank. has anyone found one that does a straight fit? or am i having to do a custom fab job?Tags: None

Who put the small tank on your bike?
The tank on the smaller L bikes is 3.4 gallons, can't imagine why yours would be smaller.
And, you should be getting over 40 mpg, so you probably need to address that, rather than look for a tank that you will have to modify to fit.
The later ('82 and up) L tanks were 4.3 to 4.5 gallons, but they mount differently. Might be possible with some fabrication.

My GLD tank mounts with the two rubber knubs up front and 2 bolts straight down through some ears at the rear, if its similar style to yours you might be able to find one and just modify the area under the seat where it mounts in the back to make it fit.

Your L frame should have the place up forward under those little plastic covers where the tank mounts would have been if it was a G model.
You could weld some mounts on there, cut off the L tank mounts, and put on a G tank.
I'm not sure it would fit with all the other L parts, seat, side covers, etc..

I can't even verify it at home, because I have (or will, very soon) '80 and '81 850Gs and an '82 850L, so I can't tell if the difference is due to model or year.
