    Got he carbs cleaned and back on now what?

    I've got a 1979 GS 1000. I have adjusted the valves, replaced the points & condensers, set the timing and was planning on removing the carbs and give them a good cleaning . Last week it would not start easily and was running poorly, so I thought that the carbs were mucked up and I would proceed with cleaning them. I took them all the way down and thoroughly cleaned them. Kits from Z1 were installed, they were put back together and put back on. I set the pilot air (top)at 1 1/4 turn out & the pilot jet (bottom) at 1 turn out. When I got it started it popped, backfired and farted but it ran....poorly, but it ran. How do I go about adjusting these carbs further? What's the next step or steps when trying to get it to run well? Any help would be apreciated...

    Hi Mr. Jackson,

    If you did not follow THIS PROCEDURE, soaking each carb body in Berryman's Carb Cleaner for 24 hours, and install THIS O-RING KIT, I would suspect that you still have carb issues. There is usually no need to install aftermarket carb kits. Just clean the carbs properly, install the new O-ring kit, and reassemble with the stock hardware (unless it is damaged or worn, of course).

    There are a couple of maintenance lists in your "mega-welcome" that will usher you into GS-topia if you follow the prescribed procedures. Let's get started.

      I would start with your air mixture screws at 3 full turns out and go from there.

        Youre giving him directions for carbs that arent on his bike. His is a 78. They have VM carbs. They have TWO mix screws a piece. One air, one fuel.

        The one on the bottom is the fuel screw... Roughly 3/4 turn out on that. Leave it. The one on the side is the AIR screw. 1.5 turns out on that to start... should get it in the ball park.

        But, as I asked in your OTHER thread about this, when is the last time you adjusted your valves?? Secondarilly, is your airbox sealed properly? Intake boots at least have RECENT orings behind them?? You have stated you've cleaned the carbs, and your troubles, but your list of maintenance is incomplete.
