Jets for 750
Hello. I'm starting to put a '78 750 on the road. It has a K&N Air filter in the original air box and 4 into 1 pipes. I'm giving the carbs a cleaning/rebuild and see I have 102 main jets, which is what comes with the carb kits. Does anyone know what a good starting point for the Main and Pilot jets would be for this set-up?Tags: None

Leave the pilots alone and bump the main to 105 or maybe 107.5. Just depends on altitude And state of tune etc. Might have to move the needle down a notch maybe.

Greetings and Salutations!!
Hi Mr. DannyBoats,
A proper cleaning and rebuilding of your carbs should include a nice 24 hour bath in Berryman's chem dip and a new set of O-rings from our friend Robert Barr @ http://cycleorings.com/ . There are many more maintenance tips in your "mega-welcome". Let's get started.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Jets for 750
Thanks Mr. BassCliff,
I've been lurking for a good year and a half, which is when I got my first GS, a '79 550L, all stock. Between the manuals for her, and this site I've been able to keep her running well. Late last summer I got a good deal on the '78 750 with 11,000 miles, which I'm just starting to get road-ready. The carbs were gunked-up so I rebuilt them, and she fires-up and idles fine, but the throttle response is slow. I expected the Jets were small with those Pipes. I am rebuilding seized brake calipers now, when done I can see how she rolls. Other than getting the carbs set-up right, and the brakes, she's in great shape.
I retired my car one year ago and use my 550L as my everyday rider, all year, excluding snow/ice days. She's a great bike and I love her dearly. When the 750 is up and running properly, the 550 will start to get a much deserved complete going over, which means I'll be asking questions.
Thanks for the welcome, and a great site for us GS lovers!
Dan

Well while I still think you need to bump the mains, keep in mind that with the older VM carbs a little more finese is required to romp on the throttle. Because those carbs are more or less a single stage design, whacking the throttle open, even when in perfect tune, will result in a slight, quick bogging action because you've effectively dumped the vacuum the carbs need to draw air across the jets from the motor. Quick throttling these carbs requires more of a fast smooth roll on than a herky jerky wrist snap. If you get good at it, they're just as street friendly as the CVs. Just takes a little practice
