    Climbing Idle

    Ok...

    81 GS1100E.
    Air filter pods.
Mains I belive to be 130's
    pilots the stock 45's
    needle raised about 1.2mm
    fuel screws out 3.5 turns?

Bike ran great, interstate 80 MPH, no problem, idling no problem.
Petcock started leaking down the pulse tube into #2 carb. The bike got parked.

    6 months later...

Installed all new gaskets from the block up to the valve cover since I was leaking oil from the head/cyl gasket, and fuel from the leaking petcock when #2 was TDC. Anyways, installed all new gaskets. And for an added kick installed a V&H sidewinder 4 to 1 open pipe. And a new petcock.

Time to fire the bike up, turned to pri... Waited, cranked.. hmmm cranked... little choke, fires up. After a bit of warming up with the choke, pushed it in, idle dropped to normal.. 1000rpm or so. The after about 30 to 45 seconds of idle the RPMs would climb to about 3.5k or so and it would start popping out the pipe, like if it was too lean.

The rubber mounts from the carbs to the head are new, less then a year old, sealing great. The carbs have never had an issue till now. No signs of extra fuel coming out the overflows or leaking back into the pods.

V&H said to install 47.5 pilots. Would too lean of a pilot pick up the idle like that?

    My list of to do's:
    Check condition of plugs, rich/lean
Check fuel flow from the petcocks outlet and pulse(let)
Hook up synchro gauges to make sure thats right.

    Pull carbs.. double check, rejet?

    Ideas?

With that sidewinder with no baffle I'd get a 47.5.
The main at the smallest with that pipe will be 135. I'd put in a 140 to start.
Get a Dynojet kit. Set the needle at the second from the bottom and the jets stated above.
If a DJ kit isn't feasable then take out the spacers on the needle all together.
How are you going to go right with the sidewinder?

All the turns at my track are all left I guess.. Wait there is one right to turn into the staging lanes. Dammit, I guess I will take it wide and slow. The bike doesn't sit that low really, the pipe wouldn't be too bad for the street either. Just a bitch to clear the rear brake lever. I had to cut it and more it up a bit to clear the pipe. But it works great that way, at least on the bench so far.

So you think the racing idle would be from too small of pilots?

If you say the intake pipes are sealed I'd say yes.
If you're track racing and not dragracing I'd get the DJ needle.

So jets could cause the idle to climb?

          Step by step:

Try to start the bike cold, nothing.

Pull enrichener out all the way.., a little cough, but wont run.

Use about half enrichener, starts a bit rough but catches its self and idles well and slowly raises as it warms.

Push the enrichner closed, the idle drops to around normal.

Wait 30 - 45 seconds and without touching anything the idle begins to climb up.

The enrichener doesn't move or pull open.

Your saying this could be from a too small of pilot? Fuel screws turned in too far? I think they are ar about 3.5 turns out.

Check and make sure your choke rail is closing all the chokes.
