    air filter problem

I just got my gs 850l, and the filter material on the air filter is shot. Is there a replacement available?

        Hi,

Usually they are in the airbox.

        Specifically: http://www.unifilter.com/online%20ca...eetsuzuki.html
        (Hint: It's the NU-2436.)

        or

Shop replacement K&N air filters, cold air intakes, oil filters, cabin filters, home air filters, and other high performance parts. Factory direct from the official K&N website.

        Specifically: http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=SU-1200

There is a long list of vendors in your "mega-welcome". I ordered a K&N from my local AutoZone.

            Yeah.

Sorry. I've had a busy weekend, I'm tired, and I should just shut down my computer.

I apologize to Mr. drtybykr. You caught me on a bad day.

Stupid question so be as sassy as you like

When I look up the air filter for my bike, on the K&N site, it gives me a cartridge type, when the one in my bike now is just flat...how does that computer and is there a trick to replacing the stock with the K&N? My Clymer manual doesn't address THAT particular issue so I put it to you: go find a flat one or figure out how a cylindrical one would fit in the airbox. Thanks much.

A picture of your bike and of the air filter would be helpful as many of the GS's have been modified . It sounds like you have pods??

The stock 850 filter consists of a metal frame wrapped with a piece of formed filter foam. The K&N filter uses the stock metal frame but it replaces the foam. It's not clear what your bike has right now so it's hard to comment.

air filter cage that fits into the air box. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...o/PICT2048.jpg

weatherstrip is on the "top" of the metal cage and if you look closely you can see the K&N underneath the cage. remove the two screws holding the retainer (not visible in the picture) to the metal cage, remove retainer, install filter, place retainer on top of filter and re-install the two screws.

                    it's #2 in this picture. http://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1982%20GS850GL/01.gif
or #2 in this one. http://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1980%20GS850GL/01.gif

the K&N looks like this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/79-83...Q5fAccessories

if you check out a site like http://www.bikebandit.com you can plug in your bike's year make and model, it will bring up microfiche that will show you the parts. Some Suzuki dealers, like the local one here in Hartford (http://www.newenglandcyclecenter.net) do the same thing; you can look up the bike and see microfiche with Suzuki part numbers. Good luck!

I could show him the air filter removal tool too...

                          Hi,

Perhaps you'd like to start your own thread, and mention your bike's year and model, so that no one gets confused as to which bike we're working on, yours or the original poster's.

                          I'm easily confused.

                          Thank you for your indulgence,

                          BassCliff

K&N, AFAIK, has both pod filters (one for each carb, with no airbox), and an OEM type filter (goes in airbox).
