    exhaust (ewwwww)

so heres where im at with my so called exhaust system...

as you can see the h-pipe and center headers are junk...the outer headers and mufflers are usuable but im not so sure if i want to reuse them or not...im on a tight budget....i think i could clean them up pretty well to make them ok but i am worried about the internal condition of the muffler...i would imagine its pretty rusty on the inside...is it something i should be worried about?..should i replace the whole system or just the center headers?

also 4 out of 8 of the bolts broke off getting the system off so i wil need to get them out somehow

Chop and build: 10 bucks worth of exhaust pipe and lots of elbow grease.
    This was my fix:

I did pretty much the same thing with an '81 850.

This is why I had to do it.

        A bit closer.

1 1/2" exhaust pipe from Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Shuck's, etc. is about $7.
Mine had to be 7" long, yours may be different.
Cut a slot in the flared end so the clamp can do its job.

        Complete with center header pipes.

EDIT to answer the questions you asked while I was posting:
The source for parts will depend on what's in your little corner of the world. I mentioned some of the ones I know of, but any of the normal auto parts storres should have the tubing.

The H connector is not necessary. It changes the sound of the exhaust a little by spreading the exhaust pulse from the two inner cylinders to both mufflers, but it is not really necessary to have it. Virtually all of the GSs before 1980 did not have them, they only started showing up in '80. Many bikes from other manufacturers don't have an H pipe either.

I never did understand why they would install the H pipe where they did, unless it was only to change the exhaust sound. If they had installed it after the Y where 1&2 and 3&4 come together, it would benefit mid-range a bit, but why install it farther upstream, between 2&3?

          Exhaust Repair

Here's a quick link to a similar repair I did on mine, with part #'s from canadian tire. It should at least get you in the ballpark.

i absolutely positively cannot find this pipe...i would either need a 1 3/8" inside diameter pipe for perfect fit or 1 1/2" outside diameter 18 gauge pipe which the inside diameter of this pipe would be close enough...looks like what you have is a 1 1/2" o.d. to 1 3/8" o.d. which would work fine for me if i could find it...ive been everywhere...where did you get yours?

Really ?? That's just crazy....How about a welding shop or something of the sort ? Those guys always have assorted pipes laying around. Seems like there would be an old guy around there somewhere that has a "shop" and could fix it up for ya.

Was Pepboys on your list of everywhere?
They usually have an entire section dedicated to nothing but exhaust accesories.

You talked to someone from Pepboys auto parts?
Maybe the Pepboys in your area is better than mine but odds are the person you talked to didnt even check to see what size pipes they had.
