Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Does this bike run on 2 carbs and then only use the others when you really ask for it?

Carb or Kick-down?
I have an 83 GS850G and I'm trying to figure out if I have a problem or a blessing in disguise. The issue is that my bike generally runs perfectly except for when you really get on the throttle something strange happens! Its almost like it kicks-down into a lower gear, or similar to a 4-barrel carb on a car, its like the other two carbs open up! It'll go from around 4-5000rpm up to over 8000rpm with a huge surge in power almost instantly. The gear indicator shows that I'm still in the same gear and once I let off the throttle it calms back down.

When everything is adjusted properly, the bike runs on all four carbs all the time.
The purpose of what we call a "carb sync" is to SYNChronize the carbs so they all open at the same time.
Sounds like that maintenance item is in your immediate future.
NOTE: before performing a carb sync, it is usually advisable to to a valve adjustment, especially if you can't remember when that was last done.
You don't have to do both items, but if you do, do the valves before the carbs.

I think an 850 owner may well tell you this is normal for that bike.
My 750 is just the same. At 6,000rpm it lights up - feels almost like a turbo kicking in. Quite dramatic. Scared the heck out of me the first time I did it - WHOA - What The Heck Was That

You gotta spin it, man.
My 850 spends a LOT of time above 6,000 rpm. The engine is made to do this.
I can't stand it when these old farts putt around on a GS below 4,000 rpm all the time.
I've been accused of making engine modifications on my 850 a couple of times. Nope -- I'm just two gears lower, using the powerband as Suzuki intended.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

my bike also has an insane accelaration in 3rd gear from 5k to redline
no other gear results in what is literally like a fourbarrel openbing up
it actually forces you back on the seat

My first thought.
Mine climbs quick but it also goes faster. Before I "adjusted" the springs only the RPM would climbsigpic

82 850GZ here. Mods in my sig. Everytime I quickly throttle up or down, it quickly moves me forward or back. Absolutely love the sound when going through the gears and then letting off the throttle with no back firing. Music to my ears.
