    Exhaust Holes

Got some pictures here of where my header pipe connects to the rest of the exhaust system. Will the gaskets (kind of look like steel wool (don't have them installed in picture)) be able to patch this hole or do I need to think creatively here? Thanks in advance!

    You need to be creative

Do you think the header is salvageable? Or would it be wiser to go to a mac 4-1 system?

Is that the crossover or the header pipe that is disintegrating?

If it's the crossover, the solution is rather easy (and inexpensive).

Go to your favorite auto part store (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Shucks, etc.), get two 18" lengths of 1 1/2" exhaust pipe. (Well, that's what my 850 uses, hope your bike is similar.) Cost, when I got mine a few months ago, was $6.99 each.

Cut them to 7" long, using the flared end.
Cut slits in the flared end so you can use your clamps.

        Assemble with the stock clamps.

Here is why I had to do mine:

        A closer look:

And, no, I don't have a lot of nerve putting exhaust parts on the carpet.
That's MY carpet, out in the garage.

Steve, does that mean you got rid of the crossover completely?

That is correct, the crossover is GONE.

No real problem there, at least on the 850, that's the way the '79s were. The crossover was added in '80. Not sure about other models.
