    Exhausts aren't equal

    I've noticed that the LH hand exhaust on my 650 seems to have more pressure comming out of the pipe than the RH side. I'm thinking this might be an indicator of weak coil or something. The carbs were rebuilt and synced by me last August. New plugs then. Valves adjusted as well and 2k miles sinced this work. I runs smooth and has good exceleration but this is judged by someone who has only rode a 450 in recent times. Does anyone have any ideas? The LH coil seems to have been replaced, as it is much cleaner and of a different color.

    Different compression numbers?
    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      Don't use exhaust flow as an indication that you have a bad coil.

      The left coil does the outer cyinders (1&4), the right coil does the inner cylinders (2&3).

      To further complicate things, there is a balance tube between #2&3 exhaust pipes, so some of #2's exhaust will go out both pipes, same for #3.

        All the cylinders are relitivly close to each other in compression. After I wrote I wondered which coils fired what cylinder. Thanks guys.

          The carbs may need synched. Honda CB350/360 manuals actually directed you to equalize the exhaust pulses in order to synch the carbs.

          Another possibility is one muffler may be plugged. My boss (owner of the Kaw shop) couldn't figure out why his Gold Wing wouldn't run well. When I revved it up, it shot little smoking balls of something out the exhaust. Over the winter, mice had been stockpiling dogfood in the right muffler .

              When you have separate pipes for each cylinder, that is a possibility, but with the exhaust setup on the GS, it's not possible.
