Fuel Tank GS550L
Does the fuel tank from a 1986 GS550L fit a 1981 GS550L? I purchased a worn out bike from an individual who had purchased it from another... When I finally got around to installing the tank and seat I noticed the tank I have has a single mounting hole (rear of tank) in the center. I appears to be from a 1977-79 GS550L, and it doesn't have a sending unit. I was going to fabricate a bracket to install it, but there is also a seat to tank fit issue, the seat doesn't set right so the front of it would need to be trimmed. Long story short, I found another tank on EBAY from a 1986 model with what appears to be the correct aft mounting tabs (2), and looks like it would bolt up. Any info would be appreciated...Tags: None

Hi,
A lot of tank mounts and other minor changes occurred between '81 and '82 on a lot of the GS line. I don't think many body parts from an '86 would fit an '81 without modification.
Anyway, I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

One of the other guys covered this in a thread.. for the life of me I cant remember where its at. But theres 2 different mounting types for the tank. A single larger bolt, and 2 smaller ones.
