I've learned a lot so far just clicking around this forum for hours everyday, I love it. You guys are awesome, ANYWAYS is it okay to use silicone gasket maker? (inside the airbox)-There is a gap between the air filter tray thingy and the actual body of the air box... like at least 1cm.. that cant be good. Second issue, once I figure out how to get that thing screwed flush to the air box, I'm thinking about using that silicone substance to seal it off, how does this sound?

Don't use silicone, it will slowly degrade in the gas fumes.
Use thick foam weatherstripping on the airbox so that sliding the filter into place will seal it. There is a guide on BassCliff's site that shows how to do the whole airbox and there is also a pictorial by Roostabunny that shows the same thing.

You'll find lots of GS lovin' on my website. I can't tell from the picture in your sig exactly which bike you have, looks like an 8-valve motor. An air intake system with no leaks is critical to get your engine running right. You'll find lots more suggestions in your "mega-welcome". Let's get started.
