    Carb dip question

Just a quick question. Ready to dip my carbs and need to know if its ok to put entire carb body in the juice. I have taken ALMOST everything off it expect the little spring loaded "paddle" (i know this isn't the correct name). It looks like the spring portion has some sort of nylon bushing on it and I don't want to burn it up by leaving in in the dip overnight. Please see pics. I've circled the item in question. If i do, in fact, leave this part on the carb body, should i prop open the paddle with a screw of something?

Btw, i've looked at the carb clean up pdf's many times, which show the spring assy still on.

    thanks

You can leave those parts on.

I'm not a fan of the 24 hour diping some others recommend due to concern with the rubber throttle shaft seals. I tyically dip for about 4 hours which is plenty most of the time, unless your dip sauce is getting tired.

Just a little reminder... make sure you get the pilot screws out before dipping. Suzuki installed plugs over the top and some people don't know the screws even exist.

@ nessism... thanks for the advice. I have been a little leary of the 24 hour dip as well. 4 hours sounds good to me.

The key is to make sure the carb orifices are open. Get some spray carb cleaner and after rincing off the dip, spray though all the various passages. Some key areas include making sure the pilot jets are open, the passage though the float bowl, the pilot circuit, and the choke pick up tube (brass tube that stick up (or down) into the float bowl. As long as these passages are open, no worry.

my berrymans was tired so i had to go 24 hours, but if your stuffs good, 6 hours is plenty.

Another option would be to use a rubber safe, biodegradable carburetor cleaner instead of the berrymans.

thanks again gents. One last question... these carbs have brass floats. Just want to make sure that they can go into the dip as well. I guess it couldn't hurt since most of the circuits are also brass....

Yeah, brass floats will be fine.

I strip my carb bodies down to nothing before I dip them though. I also hit the inside with a little wd40 once they're dry, otherwise I usually find a little corrosion popping up here and there. Finally I hit the throttle shaft bushings, choke bores and choke rod guides with a very light coat of MOS2 assembly lube and pack a little sil-glide into the channel of the throttle shaft seal. I don't think the MOS2 can hurt anything and maybe it'll keep the bushings of wearing. My first set is still going strong about five years after a dip and rebuild.

Is Chem Dip safe to use? I used it when I put new rings on my pistons, still should have a little juice left for dipping the carbs.

I use the Napa dip.. The new enviro friendly kind I guess.. It's all I could find locally.

With that stuff 20 min will do the trick on a over winter (opps I forgot the stabil) set of carbs.. 4-8hr on older long term grunge.. 3 days for frozen pilot screws..

I soaked a master cylinder for 3 weeks to get it unstuck (it worked!)
The rubber O rings didn't melt.. they were just three times bigger!
I doubt a short soak with the friendly dips will do much to rubber.

I still wouldn't get a CV diaphragm anywhere near the can..

It shouldn't really matter if someone leaves the o-rings in the carbs during dipping. Not because it won't hurt them, but because you should be replacing them anyways.

seperate first, then read up on this subject to get familiar with what your gonna see when you break them down so theres no suprises....then dip away and be amazed by the oh mighty cleanlyness of the carbs....

The GSR homepage has a link to a tutorial on how to tear down the carbs. You will need an O-ring kit from cycleorings.com and don't forget the intake boot O-rings too.
