    Hot hot hot......

I started up my bike today, let it run for 2-3mins max, and the down pipes got really hot....I mean REALLY hot!

The engine felt fine/normal for that running time, just the down pipes. Got a nice little burn on my left hand from them about 40mm long!

What would cause them to heat up so very, very fast??

Belive it or not I am!
This was hotter than I think they should have been for that length of running time.
Like I had been rider around for an hour non stop type of thing.

That would be gasoline combusting in your engine. Last I checked this is how Internal COMBUSTION Engines worked....

If you don't believe me this may help clear up some of the mystery behind modern automotive movement.
It's the reason you can put the pedal to the metal and go from 0 to 60 in seconds. But to the uninitiated, an engine can look like a jumble of metal and wires.

You'll burn your hand on those pipes if it's been running for 30 seconds or less - this sounds normal (it is an aircooled bike).

Seanie, that sounds like deja vu, once I was riding my 1000G and next miute, stopped at a traffic light, I noticed the one exhaust header glowing cherry red, i nearly dropped my guts right there, pulled over and parked the bike, after letting it cool down for about 2 or 3 hours restarted it, and it was fine, never to do it again.
The strange thing is, the motor temp was normal and it was running fine.
The only thing I can think of is an exessively lean mixture to generate that sort of heat, who knows????????

Lean conditions can cause red hot pipes. What do your plugs look like?
                How does the bike run?
However Im betting any bike that sits idle for two or three minutes are gonna have hot pipes, and Im not a betting man.
