kz100 carb boots
I just received the KZ1000 carb boots from Z1. I got confirmation from Z1 that they would work on my '80 GS850 with VM29 carbs but I would have to elongate the wholes. Well, the good news is that the carb part of the boots fits alot more snug than the old ones I had (maybe I had wrong boots for VM29 carbs before?) but the head part does not fit. The distance between holes is so small that one of the holes on the head is completely outside the footprint of the carb boot. How did others make them fit?Tags: None

Hi,
I had heard that the KZ boots would fit the GS 1000, but I've never heard of them fitting the 850. It doesn't look like you and "make" them fit with that much difference in size.
Thank you for your indulgence,

I'm not sure I would have enough of the boot to hold on to if I do that, especially since they have to hold the weight of the carbs and the pods. As you can see from the picture the bolt hole is completely outside of the boot.

I had a similar issue with VM29s on the 700E. Different cylinder head though.
I assume the stock carbs are BS32s. If so, VM29s measure 34mm OD on the spigot, and the BS32s measure around 39mm OD. This would need different spigot mount intake flanges for sure. Not sure where to locate them. I had located several websites that carry them, just never found the right bolt centers and length. I ended up making some adaptors for the stock boots, but this would be difficult not having access to a lathe.
What is your intake flange bolt center spacing at the head, and what is the bolt centers of the intake flange boots on the KZ boots?
The KZ flanges may work if modified, or you might need to try to find some others that will have a wider bolt center. I would hold off on modifying them given they are not cheap, and you may have other issues that may come up as well if you have not concidered them, even if you get them to fit.
Other issues I had were the spacing of the VM29s vs BS32s, clearance for the throttle cable cam of the VM29s, and petcock location. On the spacing number one and four carbs were spaced right, but two and three were off by 6mm in either direction. On the clearance for the throttle cable cam it would hit the cam chain tunnel on the head, which it needed about 3/4" to get the throttle cam to swing without hitting the head. On the petcock location I ended up using a Pingel with an offset adaptor plate. I only have off and reserve due to clearance between the carbs and head. The stock vacuum petcock would not work due to the angle of the fuel nipple and center location. A manual on off petcock, the cheap one Z1 sells would not work with an off set adaptor plate either due to the nipple location. I have all three now.
These issues may not be relevent with your GS850. Just figured I would post up some other things that might need looking at, if not looked at already.
I'm running VM29s, but they are litterally crammed in there.

Well I heard back from the good folks at Z1 and they suggested that I slot them and use washers for the boots. The difference in spacing is 10mm (the Z1 ones are 10mm shorter). What I'm afraid of is that by slotting them it will only be compression force holding them against the head - they'll be able to move laterally since the holes are no longer there. And the carbs with pods are heavy!!

I have read somewhere that others have fabricated a support bracket to help hold them up. Attached to the rear of the carbs up to the frame.

Hi,
Why not just get the OEM intake boots? Sure, they're not exactly cheap ($23-$28 each, depending on where you buy) but you'll have to replace them only once. Then you won't have to worry about it for another twenty or thirty years.
Thank you for your indulgence,

Oops. Sorry. I missed that little detail. Do you think the '79 boots would work any better for you? Or will they be too small? The '79 used VM26 carbs.

I never thought of that!! I made these boots work by turning the holes into slots and then using washers for the bolts. I went for a ride last night and they seem to work just fine. I even went out of my way to hit some bumps to see if the carbs would get jarred loose but all is well.
