83 GS 550E carb exterior coating?

So I "rescued" a GS 550E with the infamous BSW30SS carbs that had been mostly sitting for the past few years. It was running pretty poorly (high idle, stumbling around 6k, etc) so I've stripped down and started dipping the carbs. They had visible crud in them, so even if it wasn't the full problem, it was definitely contributing. The black coating or paint that was on the outside of the carbs is coming off in the dip, and I'm wondering if that was an original coating and so needs to be replaced on them or something a previous owner added?

FWIW, while I have the carbs off I did replace the intake o-rings (the current ones had no visible cracks but also no flex left in them.)

Some of them were painted. So Use a good epoxy paint. The ones that came from the factory painted need to be repainted, they lack the exterior finish of the reg carbs, have like an etched finish

You sure Lynn? I've never been able to see any coating on the regular carbs. I've even bead blasted some a while back and the finish looks good as new.

What is underneath the paint (or whatever it is) appears to be an etched type finish, not smooth metal.

I stripped mine and did not repaint them.
          No ill effects ensued.
