1978 GS1000C fuel tank

Anyone know where i can find one? worse comes to worse I'll have it repaired but would like to have a new one to prevent future problems...

I see a few online vendors show that they are still available OEM. But the cost is about $450 - $500!

Basscliff, If Im not mistaken the tank vendors list for the 78 is actually a 79 tank.

Hi,

I'm finding three part numbers for the '78 model year; 44110-49001-019, 44110-49020-05N, and 44110-49020-05T, the last three digits being the color code.

The '79 tanks show a different part number but it looks from the fiches that they will interchange. But don't take my word for it.

They are interchangable but the 78 they have listed does not have the indentation from what I understand.
Seems like a saw it mentioned here a time or two.
Maybe Im wrong?

Unfortunatly i've called 6 different suzuki suppliers looking for a new tank and due to it being discontinued from the factory, i have not been able to get my hands on one. Went through suzukipartsnation.com (actually called and had them look it up for me, that was a no go....) cyclepartsnation.com is the same company as suzukipartsnation.com with the same phone #'s. I've contacted my local dealership in hopes of finding one, and again, it's a no go. I wouldnt mind paying a premium for a new tank as the tank i have has quite a bit of corrosion in the seam. The paint and bodywork will be done by a family friend for less then $100. i've scowered the internet looking for aftermarket oem style tanks, and i have found one gentleman in PA who would recondition the tank i have for $395 or less ($395 being the max price). not including shipping though - I'm thinking about $40 each way. Still less then brand new, but more of a hassle and much more time off the road. Not to mention that the repairs are only guaranteed for 2 years against corrosion. What is nice about it is if he calls and gives the full estimate and you dont accept the cost he'll ship it back to you no questions asked (on your dime of course.) Just got off the phone with G&S Suzuki and he said there is no tank avail but was going to look into the storage they have on site to locate one. He will call either way which was 4x better then any of the others i've called. most of them seemed not to care at all.

Anywho... Wish me luck, and if any readers have a used tank off a '78 or '79 gs1000 for sale, let me know!

The tank you will find at Suzuki dealers is indeed a 79 tank and will not have the indent. The only place to find one is used and good luck with that. When my bike was wrecked I payed $325 to have it repaired (just body work not paint) and was still cheaper than used tanks I'd seen. Used tanks in good shape go for up to $500.

Wow guys! It sounds like that tank has slowly transmuted into a substance called "unobtainium". Maybe we can ask the Na'vi on Pandora for one?

After my wreck I got lucky and found a nice tank on ebay for only $66 shipped. I wish you luck in your quest.

Not sure if he still has it but russr33 had a 1979 tank he was looking to unload.

Murray from Modern Motorcycles in Vancouver told me that the replacement tank for the '78 - '80 GS1000E models is a generic, unpainted tank that is designed to fit all 3 years of GS1000. Also it does not have the indents for the Suzuki emblems and requires the '80 fuel petcock that is on the '80 GS1000. It appears that the only bike it would be 100% correct on would be a '80 "S" model. I was lucky a few years ago to find what was thought to be a NOS tank for mine but it turned out to be an almost new warranty return due a couple a flaws in the paint that was put back in the original box. At $300 it was a real steal.

What I got from Bike Bandit listed for the '78 was a silver '80 tank. I've got two '78's and a '79, but they are all up for major work. If you are looking for an everyday rider, the '80 tank is the way to go, and will help keep your carbs in good shape for a long time.

I think im going to just repair my current tank since people want $500 + for a used tank. i mean i only have a couple of pinholes, nothing major. I'd rather spend $395 to bring my tank to "new" condition... no offence to those who have helped me out so far.

I'll post the link for the gentleman who will be doing the work for me.

His name is Joseph Moyer, and his website is www.gas-tank.com. Some of the work he's done is pretty incredible. Not to mention extremely reasonably priced
