79 850G carb question
I would like to know what is a good starting point for the pilot screws and air screws on my 850G. The bike is a little tough to start at times. I set all the valves and I sealed the airbox. Compression is excellent. So my guess it is due to the cold nature of the stock set up. Once off choke the bike runs fine but when starting it takes a while for the bike to fire.Tags: None

This subject is well covered in the archives. To search is divine.
Good starting point for a stock bike is 3/4 open for the fuel screws and double that for the air screw. Tweak for best running after that.Ed
To measure is to know.

i have my fuel screw set at 3/4 turn out and air screws starting point was 2 1/2 turns out. Some start with the air screws 2 turns out on a stock bike except for K & N air filter.
Either way that will get you going pretty good.1979 GS850G

Stock settings are 5/8 for the fuel and 1 1/4 for the air, but as everyone says those are just 'starting' points. With mine I've found two things seems to effect hard starting, the air and fuel mixtures as you're playing with and the float levels. I'm curious how the bike turns over once it is warmed up.Rob

Go back and make sure you have 12 v to the coils
Need to block the points open to check..
Low voltage = weak spark

once warmed up it starts right up. no issues at all.
I did find that if i put the bike on prime for 5 to 10 seconds first it fires up real fast.
