    Installing New Intake Boot Orings

    Okay, I finally got the intake boots off today and although the orings still look and feel fine I am replacing them. I tried to search for tips on installing the boots but I think I did it wrong so here's my question. Once I clean this up:



    and put the new oring in, do I spray the metal with anything or do I just screw it back to the engine block? If I should put on any sealer, what's the best recommendation?

    Thanks guys...hopefully I can turn this thing on again in a couple of days.

    Just install the o-rings and re-install. No need to spray with anything.

      Thank you. I'll get them back on Wednesday evening then since I'm taking the 12 yr old to a 3D archery shoot tomorrow night.

        I generally use 3 dabs of grease (or sealer) just enough to hold the O ring in the groove while you put the boot on

        Otherwise, nothing
        1978 GS 1000 (since new)
        1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
        1978 GS 1000 (parts)
        1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
        1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
        1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)

          Do you mean to protect the metal or hold the o-ring? I haven't had to use anything for the o-ring but I'd just use a little grease. I do protect the metal though, after I clean the corrosion off the backing plate I usually hit them with a little high temp engine paint to keep the corrosion down.

            Just a few dabs of plain brown grease to keep the o-ring in the groove during installation.

                Intake manifolds

                Last time I serviced the carbs on my GS I replaced the o-rings and after looking at the manifolds themselves I used a file to true the surface that mounts against the head, were obviously warped. Idles better now.

                  Thanks Basscliff. The really sad part is I have your page bookmarked at home and at work and I glossed right over it. I'll throw them back on tomorrow night as long as the storms don't roll in too heavy and I can get my tires sorted out.
