    Soot in the exhaust...

...shouldn't really be there, should it? I went to repack my muffler last night only to find out I'm out of muffler packing material. Left it disassembled and ran to work on the open megaphone. It's louder, obviously, and there's some more stumbling down low, but she accelerates smoothly and she's idling better (on her own at about 110*f, with the baffle she doesn't like to idle until about 130*f).

the muffler was full of soot, though...which means there's left-overs...which means she's not burning everything.

Just looking for suggestions when I go over the bike this winter.

1981 GS750E, K&N pods, full Kerker megaphone. Running 127 mains...can't tell if the needle is stock, and don't remember what the pilots are. Running aat 3000ft.

May be a tad rich however, I'll bet that the soot you are seeing is what is produced while you wait for it to warm up and at 0-1/2 throttle. It would likely be more from the off idle and through the pilot circuit, before you reach the mains.
