Cant get my inline fuel filter in the fuel line

I bought a bike that had an inline fuel filter. I bought a new 5/16" filter of the net but I cant get it into the existing fuel line. Are there any tips or tricks to get it to slide in? Would it be better to replace the fuel line while Im in there? What is the procedure for changing the line, it doesnt look like there is a alot of room between the carbs to get at the clamp. Any help is appreciated.

heat the line and lube the filter with something that will dry up.

Yes, boil up a jug off water, leave the end of the line in the boiling water for two mintes or so, makes it soft, so it will expand as you push the filter on.
Lube with a drop or two of dish washing liquid if need be.

I would ditch the filter all together.

I agree with almarconi, ditch the filter and get the right size line.

Chances are that you won't find it in any store, but it's available at any of the OEM suppliers.
It's 7 mm inside diameter, which is in between the 1/4" and 5/16" that you will find in the auto parts stores.
Don't be too shocked at the price of about $20 for the line, though, you get about six feet in the package and you only need about a foot per bike.

You could also use a filter that fits.

Heating and a little lube should make the line pliable enough to go on. I have to remove the airbox on my bike to gain access to the connection at the carb.
